I was casually scrolling on Goodreads through my “asap” bookshelf and I saw this book that seemed interesting and I completely forgot why it was there in the first place. Turns out it got me at the first 3 words of the description which were “The breakfast club”. Apparently it’s a combination between the breakfast club and pretty little liars. I never watched PLL but I know it’s popular… does that count? So anyways I thought that if it has common elements with The breakfast club it should be good. And man it was awesome.

One of Us is Lying by Karen K. McManus.

rating: 4/5.

The story is pretty messed up and confusing at times but I really liked it. I can actually say it was addicting. The idea of the detention, again we have a few teenagers that weren’t even friends but they end up sticking together when there’s a tragic event (one of them died right in front of them). You can’t escape the love story, of course, between the rebel and the sweetheart which is pretty cool. Better than I expected actually.

One thing that I appreciated and I have to mention is that even though it’s a YA book, at times it really doesn’t feel like it. It seems to be a legit thriller/crime book that happens to involve teenagers. They’re all mature and know how to deal with the accusations and the drama revolving around them and that just makes me think of all the things I wouldn’t be able to do because social anxiety and fear of phone calls heh.
Anyways, a good idea would be to squeeze a TV show out of this. I think it would be really cool. It is complex enough and it wouldn’t even need a lot of seasons. Even
a single one but good would be enough to include the whole plot in it.
I can tell you that you won’t regret reading it if you’re into this kind of stuff (or if you liked The Breakfast Club which everybody does).
